ALTERATIVE

AMEBICIDE

ANABOLIC

Affects nervous system and nerve function due to its ability to reduce anxiety without causing excessive sedation.
APERIENT
Affects digestive system and nutrition due to its ability to cause evacuation of the bowels without irritation and griping. A mild laxative.
APERITIF
Affects digestive system and nutrition due to its ability to act as an appetizer before a meal. Usually is a drink this contains alcoholic.
APHRODISIAC
Affects endocrine system and hormone function due to its ability to stimulate sexual desire.
AROMATIC
Affects digestive system and nutrition due to its ability to stimulate the appetite and gastric secretion based on the action of the volatile oil or other aromatic principle. Aromatics are also used to relieve flatulence, open nasal passages, improve palatability of medicines or give a psychological boost.
AROMATIC BITTER
Affects digestive system and nutrition due to its ability to stimulate the appetite and gastric secretion. Usually has both a volatile oil and bitter principles.
ASTRINGENT
Affects endocrine system and hormone function due to its ability to cause contraction of tissues.

Affects immune system and reactivity due to its ability to destroy bacteria. May not necessarily kill their spores
BACTERIOSTATIC
Affects immune system and reactivity due to its ability to inhibit or slow bacterial growth but does not kill bacteria.
BITTER
Affects digestive system and nutrition due to its ability to stimulate the appetite. Bitters stimulate the secretion of saliva and gastric juice reflexively by exciting the taste buds. They are not effective if given directly into the stomach, as in the form of a pill.
BITTER TONIC
Affects digestive system and nutrition due to its ability to stimulate the flow of saliva and gastric juice in order to increase the appetite and to aid the digestive system.
BLOOD COAGULANT
Affects immune system and reactivity due to its ability to cause, stimulate or accelerate blood coagulation.
BLOOD PURIFIER
Affects liver and detoxification systems due to its ability to clean and purify the blood by promoting eliminative functions and the removal of waste matter.
BRONCHODILATOR
Affects immune system and reactivity due to its ability to "open up" (dilate) the airways of the lungs (bronchi and bronchioles) due to antispasmodic action.
BRONCHOSPASMOLYTIC
Affects immune system and reactivity due to its ability lessen or relive smooth muscle spasms in the airways of the lungs (bronchi and bronchioles), thereby reliving bronchospasms as in bronchial asthma.
BULK LAXATIVE
Affects digestive system and nutrition due to containing fiber that acts as a laxative.

CALMATIVE
Affects nervous system and nerve function due to its ability to cause a mild sedative or tranquilizing effect; weaker than a sedative.
CANDIDICIDE
Affects immune system and reactivity due to its ability to destroy Candida species, and stop Candidiasis, which is an infection by any species of Candida, chiefly Candida albicans.
CAPILLARY PROTECTANT
Affects digestive system and nutrition due to its ability to reduces capillary fragility and permeability, thereby strengthens capillary walls and minimizes bruising.
CARCINOSTATIC
Affects immune system and reactivity due to its ability to arrest or inhibit the development or progression of a carcinoma.
CARDIAC DEPRESSANT
Affects nervous system and nerve function due to its ability to slow down the action and force of the heart and lowers blood pressure.
CARDIAC REMEDY
This is a general term for herbal remedies that have an action on the heart. Some of the remedies in this group are powerful Cardio-Active agents such as Foxglove, while others are gentler and safer Cardiac Tonics such as Hawthorn and Linden. These remedies are discussed in more depth in the section on the cardiovascular system.

CARMINATIVE
Affects digestive system and nutrition due to its ability to relieve gases from the gastrointestinal tract and relieves colic.
CATHARTIC
Affects digestive system and nutrition due to its ability to produce bowel movements and evacuation of the bowels.
CEREBRAL STIMULANT
Affects nervous system and nerve function due to its ability to stimulate the activity of the cerebrum, esp. the higher centers of reason and thought, self-control, will, etc.
CEREBRAL VASODILATOR
Affects nervous system and nerve function due to its ability to increase blood flow within the cerebrum by dilating the veins.
CHOLAGOGUE
Affects liver and detoxification systems due to its ability to stimulate the emptying of the gallbladder and the flow of bile into the duodenum.
CHOLAGOGUE CATHARTIC
Affects liver and detoxification systems due to its ability to stimulate the flow of bile, causing purgation with green colored and liquid stools.
CHOLAGOGUE PURGATIVE
Affects liver and detoxification systems due to its ability to stimulate flow of bile, usually to the point of producing green stools as a purgative
CHOLERETIC
Affects liver and detoxification systems due to its ability to increase the production of bile by the liver.
CIRCULATORY STIMULANT

CIRCULATORY TONIC
Affects digestive system and nutrition as well as detoxification due to its ability restore tone to the muscular tissue that makes up the circulatory system, thereby increasing strength and the ability to transport blood.
CNS DEPRESSANT
Affects nervous system and nerve function due to its ability to tranquilize the mind, slow down voluntary actions, dull the senses and may produce sleep in large doses.
CNS STIMULANT
Affects nervous system and nerve functions due to its ability to temporarily increase the activity of the central nervous system, including mental and physical activities.
COAGULANT
Affects immune system and reactivity due to its ability to promote blood clotting.
CORONARY VASODILATOR
Affects nervous system and nerve function due to its ability to Cause relaxation of the blood vessels which causes them to dilate (become less narrow).
COUNTERIRRITANT
Affects immune system and reactivity due to its ability to produce a local inflammatory reaction and affect some other part of the body by relieving underlying inflammation of deeper structures. Also used to draw blood away from deep-seated areas.
CYANOGENIC
Affects immune system and reactivity due to its ability to generate of cyanide or is capable of producing hydrocyanic acid.

Affects immune system and reactivity due to its ability to that reduce congestion, usually sinus congestion.
DEMULCENT
Affects immune system and reactivity due to its ability to soothe and protect, or soften the tissue it is applied to.
DEOBSTRUENT
Affects digestive system and nutrition due to its ability to relieve or remove obstruction, removes an obstruction to flow esp. from the natural ducts of the body.
DEODORANT
Affects liver and detoxification systems due to its ability to absorb or destroy foul odors.
DEPURATIVE
Affects liver and detoxification systems due to its ability to cleanse and purify the system, particularly the blood, by promoting the excretion and removal of waste material.
DERMATOLOGICAL AGENT
Affects immune system and reactivity due to its ability to help treat skin disease and inflammations.
DETOXIFIER
Affects liver and detoxification systems due to its ability to help facilitate the removal of toxins from the body.
DIAPHORETIC
Affects liver and detoxification systems due to its ability to increase perspiration, and promote toxin release through the skin. Also used to assist immune system and reactivity due to its ability to break a fever.
DIGESTANT
Affects digestive system and nutrition due to its ability to aid in the digestion of food. An agent that will digest food.
DIGESTIVE
Affects digestive system and nutrition due to its ability to promote or aid digestion.
DIURETIC
Affects liver and detoxification systems due to its ability to increase the secretion of urine, and excretion of waste through the urine.

EMETIC
Affects digestive system and nutrition due to its ability to produces vomiting when it is desired.
EMMENAGOGUE
Affects endocrine system and hormone function due to its ability to promote or affects the flow of menstrual fluid. Emmenagogues are not to be used during pregnancy in order to avoid a harmful miscarriage.
EMOLLIENT
Affects immune system and reactivity due to its ability to soften, soothe and protect the part of the body it is applied to.
